Lausanne Athletics Meeting: 2020 edition cancelled due to pandemic

Geneva – The 2020 edition of the Lausanne athletics meeting “Athletissima”, scheduled for next August, has been cancelled following the Swiss government’s ban on gatherings of more than 1,000 people in the context of the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, the organisers announced on Thursday.

The Federal Council (government) announced on Wednesday the ban on gatherings before the end of the summer.

“With the decisions of the Federal Council and the exceptional situation we are experiencing, we have reluctantly had to take the decision not to organize Athletissima on August 20, despite the announcement of the easing measures taken,” the organizers specify on the website of this event which is part of the Diamond League.

“It is currently impossible to allow a large number of people to meet in a restricted area between now and the end of August. We will study what alternatives and formats could still be considered in order to offer athletes the possibility of competition,” they say.

The organizers indicate that they have “already gone through difficult times. However, the global health crisis linked to Covid-19 is of a completely different magnitude. It affects everyone directly and the entire planet is concerned. It was our responsibility to make this decision.”
