Lavrov called the hypocrisy of the US statements about the testing of weapons by Russia in space

The United States is actively developing an arms race in space, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. He called the hypocrisy of Washington’s statements that Moscow is testing weapons in outer space. According to the minister, there is no evidence that Russia has tested anti-satellite weapons.

Earlier, the State Department claimed that Russia “recklessly conducted a destructive test of anti-satellite weapons against one of its satellites”, which led to the accumulation of space debris and increased the danger to astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS). Due to the threat of a collision of debris with the station, astronauts on the ISS had to hide on the ship. Roscosmos told Kommersant that everything on the ISS is operating normally.

Sergei Lavrov said at a press conference in Moscow that the US accusations against Russia are not supported by facts. “To declare that the Russian Federation creates risks for the peaceful use of outer space is, at the very least, hypocrisy,” the minister is convinced.

As Mr. Lavrov said, Washington urges Moscow to develop universal norms for space exploration. At the same time, the United States “has been ignoring the initiative of Russia and China for the preparation of an agreement on the prevention of an arms race in outer space for many years,” the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry pointed out.

“The United States itself is actively developing this arms race. In 2020, they created a space command, adopted a space strategy, one of the main goals of this strategy is formulated as the creation of a comprehensive military advantage in outer space. And to implement this strategy, the Pentagon, without any notification to anyone, is testing strike-combat weapons in orbit, including the launch of an anti-missile defense system into orbit, “added Sergey Lavrov.

The US claimed that “a major test of Russian anti-satellite weapons” took place over the weekend. Washington has pledged that it will work “with allies and partners to respond to these irresponsible actions” by Moscow. According to commercial companies capable of tracking space objects, fragments of the debris were found in orbit in which one of the Soviet spacecraft, Kosmos-1408, was launched back in 1982 and has long ceased operations.
