Lavrov: Points cannot be pulled out of Russia’s security proposals

by time news

Russia’s proposals on security guarantees are not a menu, but a package of proposals, and it is impossible to pull out individual items from it, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. At the same time, the minister promised to wait for US proposals.

“We are waiting for proposals. They promise to give them to us within a week, literally, plus or minus. And we warned them, our partners, primarily American ones, that this is not a menu, this is a package. Exactly the same package that we talked about today on the choice of alliances. This element cannot be pulled out of the general formula, approved at the highest level, regarding the indivisibility of security and the inadmissibility of strengthening one’s security at the expense of others,” Mr. Lavrov said at a press conference (quoted by RIA Novosti).

Mr. Lavrov called guarantees of non-expansion of NATO to the East “the key to everything.” “Everything else will fit into the general agreement,” the minister said.

Earlier, the head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, in an interview with the German edition of Die Welt, called Moscow’s demands for the non-expansion of the EU and NATO to the east “a purely Russian agenda with completely unacceptable conditions.”

On January 12, the Russia-NATO Council ended in Brussels. The alliance refused to guarantee the non-accession of Ukraine. Earlier, on January 10, talks were held in Geneva with the participation of Russian-American delegations. As a result of the talks, Russia and the United States also did not achieve progress on the issue of guarantees on NATO’s non-expansion.
