This Monday, President Gustavo Petro will sign the ‘No More Olé’ Law in La Santamaría Square in Bogotá. This law definitively prohibits bullfights, bullfights with bulls, bullfights with young bulls, bullfights with young bulls and bullfights with young bulls throughout the country.

Approved by the Congress of the Republic on May 28, the ‘No More Olé Law’ represents a significant advance in the defense of animal rights and the cultural transformation of Colombia. In a message through his official account on the social network X, President Petro called on citizens to participate in the sanction of the law. “This Monday at 4 pm I expect the animal rights movement, the environmental movement, the women of Bogota and all the youth of the capital of Colombia to say ‘No Más Olé’ and Life First. Without life there is no humanity, this Monday in the Plaza de La Santamaría, Colombia says no to bullfighting,” wrote the president.

Key Points of the ‘No More Olé’ Law

Prohibition of bullfighting activities: The law definitively prohibits the holding of bullfights, bullfights with bulls, bullfights with young bulls, bullfights with young bulls and bullfights with young bulls throughout Colombian territory.

Three-year transition period: The implementation of the ban will be gradual, with a three-year transition period.

Economic reconversion program: During the transition period, a programme will be designed and implemented to help families who depend economically on bullfighting activities to find new sources of income.

Interinstitutional Commission: A commission composed of government entities and representatives of the bullfighting sector will be created to oversee the implementation and monitoring of the conversion programme.

Transformation of bullrings: Bullrings will be converted into cultural, recreational, sporting and artistic spaces, prioritising the integration of families affected by the ban.
