The union leaders of the Siderúrgica del Orinoco (Sidor); Leonardo Azócar and Daniel Romero have been part of the protests that have been taking place at the steel mill due to the discontent of the workers over working conditions.

Four days ago, their arrests were announced by the General Directorate of Military Counter-Intelligence (Dgcim). However, until now neither the lawyers nor their relatives have had any contact with them.

About the case; In a telephone conversation with the lawyer Eduardo Torres, defense of the workers, he classified the arrests of Romero and Azócar as “arbitrary.”

«They gave us the information on Sunday morning; and it was at 7:00 p.m. after some people managed to tell their relatives that they were being transferred to a police center.”

The human rights defender specified that; Azócar and Romero, in fact, were transferred to Caracas to be confined in a maximum security area of the Center for Prosecuted, Convicted and Women’s Annexes of the Metropolitan Area, after the First Court in Control Functions of the Bolívar state decreed a measure of deprivation of liberty

The presentation hearing, according to the jurist, was held on Tuesday June 13 with the presence of the representative of the Third Prosecutor’s Office who accused the crimes of boycott, criminal association and incitement to hatred.

“They continue with the accusation of hate crime and boycott, we do not understand what those two mean and we do not understand criminal association because they are associated to defend labor human rights, they are members of a Sutiss union,” the lawyer said.

He noted that “there is agreement 87, which is the freedom of association of the International Labor Organization (ILO), there is the constitution, the Labor Law, and they are even active leaders.”

It is worth remembering that along with Azócar and Romero, Juan Cabrera was also arrested; Regarding the latter, Torres indicated that he was released a day later.

He considers that the precautionary measure is an “outburst”

In reference to the unnamed precautionary measure decreed this Tuesday, June 13 by the First Court of First Instance of Labor Trial against 22 workers, including Azócar and Romero; The lawyer said that it is an “outburst” and it is a contradiction since there are two who are detained and charged.

He explained that this measure prohibits the group; protest, enter the company, among other notifications. Rosangely Bruces /Photo: File
