Santo Domingo, Jul 21.- Lawyer Johnny Portorreal will remain in pretrial detention accused of defrauding 283 people for an alleged million-dollar inheritance, by rejecting justice, varying the measure of coercion and decreeing house arrest, reported this Friday the Attorney General’s Office (PGR).

Judge Clara Luz Almonte made this decision, after the prosecutors asked not to vary the measure given the probability that the defendant could avoid being tried if he was released or in house arrest.

In addition, the hearing scheduled for today against Johnny Portoreal Reyes and three other people involved in the million-dollar scam was postponed to August 31, in order to learn about two incidents and notify other complainants who had not been summoned this Friday.

According to the indictment, Johnny Portoreal, Miguelina Gómez Santana, Miguel D’Oleo Montero and Hilario Amparo de la Cruz conspired to defraud hundreds of those affected by the last name Rosario out of 16 million pesos, to whom they charged large sums of money, between 15,000 and 24,000 per person, with the promise of taking the necessary steps to collect an alleged million-dollar inheritance from deceased ancestors.

Supposedly, the defendants assured their victims that the money from the alleged inheritance had been transferred to the Central Bank and later to the Reserve Bank, from entities in Spain and Switzerland.

Last September, the trial was opened against the alleged fraudsters, at the request of the Public Ministry, which presented a file with more than 600 testimonial and documentary evidence. EFE
