DECRYPTION – The Minister of the Civil Service, Stanislas Guerini, now assumes his desire to reform a supposedly untouchable status.

Does Stanislas Guerini sound the death knell for civil servant status? The Minister of Transformation and Public Service told the Parisian to want « lift the taboo of dismissal in the public service ». The announcement, which came at the end of a consultation meeting organized this Tuesday, April 9 with the unions as part of the preparation of a reform bill planned for the fall, shakes up the main principle of the life-long employment which characterizes the special status of French civil servants.

In a context of deterioration in public finances – the executive was forced to update its deficit forecasts to 5.1% of GDP in 2024, compared to the 4.4% initially planned – the chestnut in the number of civil servants resurfaced.
