Ten days after the military coup in Sudan, four previously detained ministers were released. State television reported on Thursday November 4 that the “Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces” General Abdel Fattah al-Burkhan ordered the release of Hashem Hasab al-Rasul, Minister of Communications, Ali Jeddo Trade, Culture and Information Hamza Balyul and Sports, Yousef Adam.

Shortly before the announcement of the order on the release of ministers, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres held a telephone conversation with al-Burhan, urging him to enable Sudan to return to democratic reforms, to make every effort to resolve the political crisis in the country and restore the constitutional order and transition process. Guterres also called for the release of civilian members of the government, including Prime Minister Abdullah Hamduk, who is under house arrest. Earlier, the Sudanese army said a new government would be introduced shortly.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken during talks with al-Burhan also called on him to “immediately restore the civilian government” and release all politicians detained after the coup, US State Department spokesman Ned Price said on Thursday.

In a telephone conversation with Abdullah Hamduk, Blinken confirmed that the United States “strongly supports the Sudanese people as they strive for democracy.”

Military coup in Sudan

Amid the crisis that has intensified over the past weeks, the military in Sudan seized power on October 25 and declared a state of emergency in the country. The leader of the putschists, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, announced the dissolution of the government and the so-called Sovereign Council, which controlled the process of democratization of the country and which included both military and civilians. He promised that the military will continue the country’s transition to democracy until a civilian government is elected. The general has called elections for July 2023.

The US and the EU said they “continue to recognize ousted Sudanese Prime Minister Abdullah Hamduk and his cabinet as constitutional leaders of the transitional government.” They demanded a meeting with Hamduk, who, according to the prime minister’s office, was returned home by the military under heavy guard. Meanwhile, Hamduk was arrested and taken to an unknown location after refusing to sign a statement in support of the putschists.

In late October, the UN Security Council called on the military to resume political dialogue “without preconditions.” The UN Security Council also demanded the immediate release of the detainees and respect for the right to peaceful assembly. All parties should exercise restraint and refrain from violence, the document further states.
