Republican Patrick McHenry, representative of North Carolina’s 10th district and close to Kevin McCarthy, was temporarily in charge of the House of Representatives yesterday. Among the possible candidates to succeed McCarthy, McHenry is the only one who voted to certify the 2020 presidential election.

On Saturday he voted with Democrats in favor of the stopgap spending measure to keep the government open. In 2022 he decided not to run for a leadership position and opted to lead the financial services committee.

For his part, Republican Kevin McCarthy confirmed this Tuesday that he will not run again as a candidate to preside over the United States House of Representatives, after being dismissed.

“I will not run for president (of the House) again. (…) I hope you know that every day I worked regardless of whether they underestimated me or not. I wanted to do it with a smile,” said the representative from California in a press conference in the Capitol.

McCarthy yesterday became the first speaker of the House of Representatives to be removed, after a motion presented by Republican Representative Matt Gaetz, an ally of former President Donald Trump (2017-2021), garnered the support of the Democratic caucus and the of seven wayward conservatives, in addition to his own.

During his appearance, McCarthy said he may support the candidate the Republicans put forward to replace him.
