Bavarian Teacher Escapes Criminal Consequences in Anti-Semitic Leaflet Scandal
A former teacher in Bavaria can finally breathe a sigh of relief after criminal investigations into his alleged involvement in an anti-Semitic leaflet scandal were discontinued. However, he still faces disciplinary consequences.
The scandal erupted when an anti-Semitic leaflet from Economics Minister Hubert Aiwanger‘s school days surfaced. The retired teacher was suspected of passing it on to the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” newspaper. The incident sparked widespread outrage and led to calls for Aiwanger’s resignation.
While the criminal investigation has ended without any criminal charges, the teacher faces potential disciplinary action. The Bavarian State Attorney’s Office will continue its internal investigation to determine whether he violated confidentiality obligations, which could result in a reduction or even withdrawal of his pension.
The newspaper that initially reported the scandal has declined to disclose the source of the information, citing editorial confidentiality and source protection. The accused teacher refused to testify during the criminal investigation.
The anti-Semitic leaflet affair caused a political crisis in Bavaria, leading to mass protests and calls for Aiwanger’s dismissal. However, Prime Minister Markus Söder ultimately decided against removing him from office.
