As in other countries, in Mexico, orphan’s pensions are often granted, an economic benefit to minors who have lost one or both parents, in order to support their livelihood and education.

The amount of the pension varies depending on the State or the public or private institutions and companies that grant it.

Requirements

According to the Mexican Social Security Institute, if you are the child of an IMSS insured or pensioner who died and you are between 16 and 25 years of age and are enrolled in educational institutions of the National Educational System, you can directly apply for the orphan’s pension. However, if you are a minor, your legal representative must submit the application.

Necessary documentation

Deceased Insured/Deceased Pensioner

  • Any document or means of identification issued by the IMSS, INFONAVIT or an AFORE, which contains the NSS and the name of the insured
  • ThroughUnique Population Registry Code (CURP)
  • Individual Account Statement
  • Certified copy of Birth Certificate, Adoption Certificate or Recognition*
  • Certified copy of the Death Certificate

Through the legal representative of the beneficiary

  • Pension application, which will be filled out by IMSS staff and delivered for your signature
  • Current official identification
  • Unique Population Registry Key (CURP)

Document proving the identity under which you hold:

In the case of an attorney or Legal Representative:

  • Notarial testimony proving that there is a general power for acts of ownership, or a special power to carry out the corresponding procedure before the institute (Power of Attorney)

In the case of those who exercise parental authority:

  • Certified copy of Birth Certificate*, Adoption Certificate or Recognition of the minor. If applicable, certified copy of the final court ruling, which shows the exercise of parental authority by the applicant.

In the case of those who exercise Guardianship:

  • Final court ruling certifying the decision to discern guardianship, or a certified copy of the Guardianship Act.

All documents are original and copy

-Costs: The procedure is free, you only have to go to the Family Medicine Unit or the assigned Subdelegation from 08:00 to 15:00 hours, or during the extended hours determined by the Delegation.
