That does not mean that you have to spend hours in the kitchen, not at all. It’s about learning how to apply things in the cooking process.

That you learn which flavors go together (especially for beginners this is useful when learning to cook) and again which materials you can use best. Let’s start with that last one.

1. Use the right pans

Pans are the most important parts to use when cooking. Yet not everyone cooks with suitable or good pans. That’s a shame! This makes cooking easier and the food tastes better. Learning to cook for beginners therefore starts with the right material.

First of all, choose quality pans, such as Demeyere pans. These modern pans have a functional design. Exactly what you need in the kitchen! Furthermore, use the correct pans for each preparation.

Frying pans, for example, are widely used. But sometimes snack pans are even more convenient: the edge is higher and you can also put a lid on it! This means that you can put more in it and let the food stand for longer. This is ideal for many dishes.

If I personally had to choose between a frying pan or a frying pan, the latter would be my preference, especially with the fine non-stick pan that I now use.

2. Take your time

Are you always in a hurry in the kitchen and would you like your food to be on the table as quickly as possible? That is understandable, of course, but it also makes your food a bit more boring.

Many tasty dishes require a somewhat longer preparation time. It may not be an option to choose this every day, but at least on your days off or during the weekend, for example.

Because good cooking also means good food. And the latter is the icing on the cake when learning to cook for beginners and advanced. Because for that taste (and the accompanying compliments) you do this, right?

Make something fun out of your kitchen moments right away: so it’s not bad at all to be busy for a bit longer. Grab something nice to drink, maybe chat with your partner or family members.

In Mediterranean countries, such as Spain or Italy, the kitchen ritual is labeled as a cozy daily moment. Take this as a starting point!

Extra tip: You can also take your time by, for example, first making sure that you have cut everything that is needed in the beginning. This way you can prepare everything before you really start cooking on the fire. This way you have more rest during cooking and the result will certainly be better!

3. Get inspired by learning how to cook for beginners

It can be difficult to come up with the tastiest dishes on your own. So look for inspiration.

Dive into cookbooks or look up recipes online, for example take a look at my slow cooker recipes. There are good examples of every cuisine.

You can follow recipes step by step, so that you can exactly bring out the intended taste. Be sure to try something new that you may have never tasted before. Maybe your new favorite dish is among them!

We often only prepare a small variety of dishes, while there is so much more to discover. You can agree with yourself to make something from a cookbook once a week. That is doable. Or take home a piece of vegetables or a type of fish once a month that you are going to cook with for the first time!

4. Use seasonings

If you look at recipes, you’ll come across it soon enough. But we also want to give it as an extra tip: use lots of seasonings.

Salt and pepper are the basics, along with onion and garlic. But there is much more to think about. Unpack with dried herbs, all of which have a long shelf life in jars. Onion powder, paprika powder, coriander powder or garlic powder: just a selection from the range.

You can also use fresh herbs, such as basil or parsley. Grow herb plants in your garden! Always pay attention to which seasonings go with the dish, to make the right selection.

5. Take a course

And do you find it very difficult to choose the right seasonings? To judge what goes well with which vegetables, for example?

Then it is smart to supplement the above points with a good online cooking course. Provided you like it, of course.

In any case, I really enjoyed doing this course and it certainly helped me think about what I would put on the table, for example with the leftover vegetables that I have left.

Especially if you still have to work all day. Because maybe you don’t feel like doing your best in the evenings behind the gas stove or your induction hob.

And honestly, we all get that.

The slow cooker can certainly help you, because you no longer have to keep an eye on pans. You do everything in the slow cooker in the beginning, then set it to low or high for the required number of hours and let that device do the rest. You don’t have to worry about it anymore!

7. Enjoy natural products if you want to learn how to cook for beginners

I know, packages and bags are more convenient, but you don’t actually learn how to cook with them. You only learn to empty a package or bag into the pan, maybe add some water and that’s it.

Learning to cook means learning to deal with the products that are available to put something delicious on the table as a beginner. And that works best with natural products!

8. A finely laid table works wonders

Good food is not only about the taste, the way it looks also partly determines how much you like the food you have cooked. And the smell. It is actually a total experience.

Do you take the trouble to set the table a little cozy? Then you will certainly taste that in the meals you serve.

9. Watch a lot of Youtube videos as a beginner to learn how to cook

I’m sure it helps you. I can see it happening here in my own home. Luc is now 18 years old and has never made an effort to learn how to cook. He prefers to let his mother do it.

But lately he’s been spending more and more time in the kitchen. He will first go shopping, and then – with a film attached – cook himself a nice lunch that he can take to his internship address.

The last tip: give yourself time. You don’t have to learn how to cook in a week. You can also take a little longer for that. After all, you’re doing it for yourself, right?

So don’t expect to be able to put together a 6-course dinner in no time, that’s not what it’s about. For beginners, learning to cook is mainly learning to put something tasty (and healthy) on the table with the resources you have. After that you can always go for the advanced course.
