It was one of the first new building projects to be realized in Chemnitz city center after 1990, and may face an uncertain future: the Moritzhof civic and administrative center on Bahnhofstrasse. As the current seat of the youth and social welfare office, the finance department, the auditing and the cash and tax office of the city, it was built in the mid-1990s, like the neighboring main branch of Sparkasse Chemnitz, on the site of the former central bus stop for local transport . Because the current lease expires in 2024, the city is now looking for potential new space in the city center just in case.

According to a description published in the “Official Journal”, among other things, this involves a total of around 17,000 square meters, plus 25 parking spaces for company vehicles (15 of them with e-charging stations), ten parking spaces for company bicycles (five of them with e-charging stations) and 80 spaces for the bikes of the employees. The offered buildings should be fairly state-of-the-art and also meet current energetic standards, they say. In return, the city beckons with a rental for 15 years and an option to extend it for a further five years. The town hall will accept offers until the beginning of September.

There are a number of conceivable alternatives in the area around the inner city ring that comes into question as a location. Thus, the supplier Eins will soon be leaving the municipal utility building on Augustusburger Strasse, which was also newly built after 1990, and moving to a new building on Johannisplatz. Across the street, in the new Johannisvorstadt, new office space will be created in addition to apartments. According to information from the “Free Press”, several thousand square meters are already available in the Chemnitz-Plaza office complex at the central bus stop. With the planned closure of the call center of the operator Majorel, another 5000 square meters should be added.

But maybe everything stays as it is. If the conditions are right, one could also imagine an extension of the lease, says the town hall. However, they have been controversial several times in the past. Ten years ago the Moritzhof was even considered one of the most expensive office addresses in the city. Erected by the Chemnitz construction company Sachsenbau, the striking complex now belongs to a real estate fund, which in turn is linked to a large insurance group.
