The United States basketball team released a video showing LeBron James’ reaction upon discovering that he will be the flag bearer for the American delegation at the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics, which takes place next Friday (26).
On Monday (22), the American team was gathered before a friendly match against Germany in London, England, when guard Stephen Curry made the announcement.
LeBron James expressed gratitude for the selection and mentioned that he had never thought about being the flag bearer for the United States at an Olympics.
“First of all, Steph, thank you for the words, man. And definitely when we were kids, we all know where we come from, different lives, different cities, different upbringings, I think the last thing on our minds was one day carrying the flag and representing our country at the Olympics. It was never a consideration, it was never a dream, but it is an honor,” he stated.
The basketball star also recalled having served from the 2004 to 2012 national teams and also mentioned the upcoming presidential elections in November. According to the player, the country is “divided” in the contest between former President Donald Trump and current Vice President Kamala Harris – a favorite among Democrats.
“Being able to share this moment with you all will make it even more memorable, I just thank you. The team has given so much to us, to me over the last 20 years and I’m realizing that now. In a country that is so divided, I hope this moment brings us together, even if just for a few seconds,” LeBron said before concluding.
“It was hours of travel to Paris, so I will carry this responsibility with great honor. And I just thank you for this, thank you,” he finished.
