A lecture by the professor of the Department of International and European Studies of the University of Piraeus, Marilena Simitis, on the topic “Civil Society from 1974 to today”, is organized by the Dean’s Office of the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Ioannina in collaboration with the Department of History and Archaeology.


The event will take place on Tuesday, April 16, at 7 pm, in the Amphitheater of the Library of the University of Ioannina.
Marilena Simiti is an associate professor of Political Sociology at the Department of International and European Studies at the University of Piraeus. He holds a BA in Political Science and Public Administration from the University of Athens, an MA in Comparative Politics from Columbia University, (USA) and a Ph.D from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). In 2013 he was Visiting Fellow at the European Institute of LSE and in 2022 Academic Visitor at St Antony’s College, University of Oxford. Since the year he is a member of the Research Advisory Group of the Hellenic Observatory (LSE). He is the author of the book “Civil Society in the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership”, he has published numerous articles, chapters in collective volumes (in English, German and Greek) and has participated in research centers abroad (among others: Johns Hopkins University – Universitat Pompeu Fabra Public Policy Center, Jean Monnet Center of Excellence, Manchester Metropolitan University). Her main research interests are within the field of Political Sociology and specifically concern alternative forms of political participation in the sphere of civil society, such as non-governmental organizations, social movements, urban riots, and individualized or passive forms political participation. Her texts have been included in the syllabi of courses focusing on political protest in Universities in Greece and abroad.
