Singer Lee Eun-mi (58), known as the ‘barefoot diva’, recalled a time when she was in a severe slump due to family issues, debt problems, and health issues.
On the tvN show ‘Now, This Moment’ that aired on the 25th, Lee Eun-mi appeared as a guest and looked back on the story behind the birth of a hit song and the moments when she experienced a crisis in her life, such as a slump.
First, Lee Eun-mi recalled the moment when ‘Barefoot Diva’ was born. She left for Toronto, Canada in 1992 to prepare for recording her first album. At the time, she recorded in a high-end studio, but she had to shoulder all the costs, which made her living increasingly difficult.
On the first day of recording, Lee Eun-mi was so nervous that her ears became sensitive, and to escape the pressure, she took off her shoes and started singing. It is said that the result of the ‘barefoot recording’ was the solo song ‘Into the Memory’. In this way, Lee Eun-mi established herself as the ‘barefoot diva’.
Lee Eun-mi also revealed for the first time the story of how she ran away from home after being slapped by her father. She said, “I’m the youngest of two sons and three daughters. When I said I wanted to sing, my father slapped me for the first time. I ran away from home when I was 22,” and confessed, “I didn’t talk to my father for about four years after that. I didn’t even eat at the same place.”
He continued, “When my first album came out and I had my first concert, I left the ticket by my father’s bedside. He came to the concert with my mother,” and “My father, who saw it with his own eyes, finally acknowledged me.”
Lee Eun-mi also said that she had been in a slump for three years before releasing her hit song, “I Have a Lover.” She said, “I met composer Yoon Il-sang and overcame my slump,” and “My former agency disappeared with the advance payment for the performance. I had to shoulder all the debt due to the three-party contract,” causing regret.
At the same time, Lee Eun-mi also suffered from depression. She said, “Family issues, debt problems, and health problems all came at once and I collapsed. That’s when I got burnout,” and “I felt like my body and mind were going to fall apart from standing on stage every day to pay off my debt.”
Then, “I said I would take a break, but the break became long. The pressures came at me all at once, so I broke down and thought, ‘How can I die well?’ every single day for nearly four years. Then, the song I came across was ‘I Have a Lover.’
In addition, Lee Eun-mi confessed that the lyrics and music video for the song “We’re Breaking Up” were based on her actual experience of breaking up.
He said, “I woke up one morning and was holding a mirror when I dropped it and it shattered. That day, I saw my boyfriend and another woman getting in a taxi and holding hands affectionately. I was on the bus and waiting at a traffic light when I looked down at the taxi.” He added, “The broken mirror seemed like a foreshadowing. I inserted the scene of the mirror breaking into the music video. It’s hard to fill something up with only indirect experience.”
