On the 16th, Lee Jae-myeong, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, requested the participation of the People Power Party in the national affairs stabilization consultative body he proposed the day before, saying, “The People Power Party can take the lead in all discussions.” After the impeachment bill against President Yoon Seok-yeol was passed in the National Assembly, it is interpreted that he sought cooperation from the People Power Party, as if he was concerned about criticism that he was ‘solitary in running state affairs’. At the same time, he continued his work in the fields of diplomacy and defense, highlighting his leadership as the next presidential candidate. Floor leader Kwon Seong-dong, who served as the acting leader of the People Power Party, decided to pay a courtesy visit to Representative Lee on the 18th, saying, “I hope he doesn’t fall into the presidential game already.”
Representative Lee said at the Supreme Council meeting on this day, “I ask that the People Power Party participate (in the National Stability Council),” and “It doesn’t matter what the name, format, or content is.” He then emphasized again, “If forming a consultative body for overall national affairs is burdensome, we request the formation of a consultative body even if it is limited to the economy and people’s livelihood.” The day before, floor leader Kwon immediately refused to participate in the consultative body, so he requested participation again. A key Democratic Party official said, “Even during the impeachment of former President Park Geun-hye, the ruling and opposition parties joined forces to discuss forming a consultative body,” and added, “There is no reason for the People Power Party not to participate in order to resolve the confusion together.”
On the 18th, Floor Leader Kwon met with Representative Lee for the first time since martial law was imposed on December 3. Floor Leader Kwon proposed a courtesy visit to Representative Lee, and Representative Lee responded and confirmed the schedule. Although it is only a meeting between the new representatives, there are expectations that measures to resolve the political situation after the impeachment of President Yoon are processed will be mentioned.
Regarding Representative Lee’s decision the previous day to limit the scope of acting Han Deok-soo’s work to ‘maintaining the status quo,’ floor leader Kwon criticized it as an “exceeding remark,” saying, “The acting Han Deok-soo system is not the regent Lee Jae-myeong system.” Regarding Representative Lee’s mention of the supplementary budget, he said, “The Democratic Party’s apology and reflection on the unilateral handling of the reduced budget plan comes first,” and added, “I think it is not too late to discuss the supplementary budget when there is a need to adjust the budget, whether in March or June.” He said.
