Former Democratic Party of Korea leader Lee Jae-myung and Cho Kuk, the leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, met at the National Assembly plenary session on the 1st and had a two-hour ‘flash meeting’. It is reported that the two exchanged opinions on agenda items such as a plan for solidarity for various special prosecutor offensives, such as the Chae Sang-byeong Special Prosecutor Act and the ‘Yoon Seok-yeol Special Prosecutor Act’, and easing requirements for negotiation groups.
The meeting between the two the day before was an unscheduled event. It began when former representative Lee visited Representative Cho’s seat in the conference room where the plenary session was held and had a conversation. The two then moved to the Democratic Party’s floor leader’s office and talked for about two hours. Acting Democratic Party leader and floor leader Park Chan-dae also attended the meeting that day.
Former Representative Lee met with reporters after the meeting and said, “The Democratic Party and the Fatherland Innovation Party have so many concerns about the current political situation, and there are many areas where we need to cooperate,” and “We exchanged opinions on various areas.” Regarding President Yoon Seok-yeol’s continued exercise of his right to request reconsideration (veto), he said, “We discussed the issue a lot, but it’s frustrating.” Representative Cho said, “I shared my concerns about the national crisis in Yongsan with former Representative Lee, and we discussed countermeasures.”
In relation to this, a key member of the Democratic Party said, “I understand that they have confirmed a consensus that they should push for measures to enforce the Chae Sang-byeong Special Prosecutor Act, as well as the Yoon Seok-yeol Special Prosecutor Act and the Kim Gun-hee Special Prosecutor Act that the Fatherland Innovation Party is pushing for.” A Democratic Party official said, “The floor leaders of both parties will meet sometime next week to discuss specific implementation timing and strategies within the National Assembly regarding the pending issues shared by former leader Lee and leader Cho.”
An official from the Fatherland Innovation Party said, “There was discussion not only about strategies for handling controversial bills, but also about easing requirements for negotiating groups,” adding, “It will be difficult to lower the current 20-seat negotiating group requirement to 10, but there is an atmosphere where we can expect some level of easing.”
