On the 8th, Lee Jae-myung, the leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, criticized the prosecution’s investigation targeting former President Moon Jae-in’s family, saying, “The government’s actions are political suppression that is incomprehensible both politically and legally.” On that day, Lee visited Pyeongsan Village in Yangsan-si, Gyeongsangnam-do, to meet with former President Moon.

Cho Seung-rae, senior spokesperson for the Democratic Party, reported the 40-minute conversation between the two sides following Lee’s visit to former President Moon at his private residence in Pyeongsan Village that day. During the meeting, Lee mentioned the prosecution’s investigation into former President Moon and his family, then said, “Isn’t this a means to rally a handful of supporters?”

Regarding this, former President Moon said, “It is basically something that my family and I have to handle, but I am grateful to the party,” and added, “I will face it confidently and strongly.”

Representative Lee and former President Moon reportedly agreed that the prosecution reform carried out by the previous government was incomplete. In addition, Spokesperson Cho said, “Both sides agreed that it is regrettable that the prosecution’s investigation is becoming a weapon and a means of political retaliation.”

Former President Moon also said, “I hope the Democratic Party prepares to regain power.” Former President Moon said, “I hope the Democratic Party, led by a stronger and more unified leadership than ever before, will work more actively to regain power,” and “I hope they will work to expand their support base to regain power.”

In particular, he said, “In the case of Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam, the voting rate was around 45% in the last general election, but if the party pays a little more attention and works hard, it will receive greater support,” and asked, “The Democratic Party is doing well now, and how about taking a more proactive approach not only on people’s livelihood and politics, but also on security and national defense issues?”

Spokesperson Cho said, “Representative Lee and former President Moon agreed that an unprepared president in power is leading the country into chaos and increasing the people’s anxiety,” adding, “That is why (former President Moon) said he hopes the Democratic Party will prepare well.”

Representative Lee and former President Moon also emphasized the need for unity within the party. Representative Lee said, “We must not be shaken or divided internally by fake news that divides people and creates emotional rifts,” and former President Moon strongly agreed with this, according to Spokesperson Cho.

The People Power Party criticized the meeting between former President Moon and Representative Lee as “a ‘trick meeting’ with the blatant intention of influencing the prosecution’s investigation and trial by turning the opposition into a political force, and a ‘bulletproof alliance’ between the two that invited a crisis due to judicial risks.”

Park Joon-tae, the People Power Party’s floor spokesperson, said in a commentary that day, “Many citizens are questioning the background to the sudden meeting between Representative Lee and former President Moon and the dramatic declaration of a ‘one-team’,” adding, “It was only a few months ago that the ‘pro-Moon windfall, pro-Myeong sudden death’ occurred, in which the so-called pro-Moon forces were excluded from nominations in order to complete Representative Lee’s unilateral system.”

He continued, “It has been said that both pro-Myung and pro-Moon lawmakers will participate in the Democratic Party’s ‘Committee to Counter Political Suppression of the Former Regime,’ which will be launched tomorrow, so the outcome of today’s meeting is significant.” He added, “The sight of people with different political stances boarding the same boat reminds me of the story of the ‘May 18th Movement,’ but the sight is also pitiful.”

Park Won-soon, the floor leader’s spokesperson, said, “Representative Lee and former President Moon should stop their political evasion and stand before the judgment seat of the law,” and “It would be the behavior of an opposition political leader to reveal the truth and take responsibility in court, not in Yangsan.”
