Lee Jae-myung, the Democratic Party’s candidate for party leadership, made it clear on the 18th that he was opposed to the ‘third-party recommendation for special prosecutor Cha Sang-byeong’ proposed by Han Dong-hoon, the People Power Party’s candidate for party leadership. Regarding the comprehensive real estate tax and financial investment income tax, Lee continued his centrist and right-wing stance, saying, “It is not right to unconditionally protect them as if they were sacred agendas.” In response, Kim Du-kwan countered, saying, “The comprehensive real estate tax is the foundation of our party.”
In the first debate among Democratic Party candidates for leadership held on CBS Radio that day, this candidate asserted, “It is just to follow the current special prosecutor law.” He emphasized that the opposition party-recommended “special prosecutor law” should be enforced, rather than the method proposed by candidate Han, in which a third party such as the Chief Justice selects the special prosecutor. On the other hand, candidate Kim said, “We must respond flexibly, considering the ruling and opposition parties’ situations.”
The candidate also reiterated the need for reforming the comprehensive real estate tax and postponing the financial investment tax, emphasizing that “we need to approach it from a practical perspective and revise it.” Regarding the comprehensive real estate tax in particular, he said, “It would be unfair if I were to be double-penalized because the house I worked hard to buy became more expensive.” Regarding the introduction of the financial investment tax, he said, “Since the government had the biggest problem, a temporary postponement of the implementation period of the government’s original plan may be necessary,” and “I am willing to discuss it.” In response, Candidate Kim said, “The comprehensive real estate tax is imposed on the top 2.7% of homeowners, and the financial investment tax is also imposed on those with an income of 50 million won, or 1% of the 14 million (individual investors),” and “It is important to protect it.”
Candidate Kim said, “If this candidate plays as a player and also as a coach, I think our party will fail,” and added, “I will play as a coach, so I hope this candidate will play faithfully as a player.” He went on to mention other Democratic Party presidential candidates, including former Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum and former South Gyeongsang Province Governor Kim Kyung-soo, and asked, “What if this candidate becomes a striker who only plays hard in the World Cup qualifiers but doesn’t score a single goal in the main tournament?”
Candidate Kim also said, “Isn’t (Candidate Lee) trying to run for representative one more time because of the legal risk?” Candidate Lee countered, “Instead of saying, ‘Why are you being attacked so much?’ wouldn’t it be better if we fought together?”
