“Family is the one who realizes how precious they are when they are apart”
Lee Jae-myung, the leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, said on the 17th, the day of Chuseok, “It is a difficult and harsh reality, but I hope that we can have a fruitful time embracing each other even more warmly.”
The representative said in a Facebook post that afternoon, “I visited the graves of my loved ones during the holiday,” and added, “I think that family is someone who you don’t notice when they’re together, but when you’re apart, you realize how precious they are.”
He wrote, “Like the image of a father who was sometimes cruel but actually wanted to reconcile with his son, the grass that he had silently raised blossomed.” He added, “When I bowed down, the wind that brushed my head and back reminded me of my mother’s hand that always patted my back and said, ‘It’s okay.'”
He continued, “When I was young, I used to spend a long time watching the backs of adults heading up the mountain with rice cakes and songpyeon during the holidays,” and “I used to feel sad seeing them always return empty-handed, not knowing that they thought, ‘It would be nice if you left some for me,’ but that foolish boy has now become a father who climbs the mountain holding the hands of his two grown sons.”
He said, “The days of hunger and the unpaved roads that made visiting the ancestral graves difficult are gone, but the scenery and the scent of flowers are still the same, making my hometown even more welcome.” He added, “When I think of the countryside scenery where I used to run around in the warm sunlight and cool mountain air, I guess I’m still an incurable country bumpkin no matter how much time passes.”
He said, “The reason why the Chuseok holiday, which was longer than usual, passed by so quickly is probably because I enjoyed spending time with my family.”
