It was confirmed that Lee Jae-myeong, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, requested the court to change the court in charge in relation to his ‘Ssangbangwool suspicion of sending money to North Korea’.
According to the legal community on the 3rd, on the 30th of last month, Representative Lee’s lawyer submitted an ‘opinion on the progress of trial proceedings’ to Suwon District Court Criminal Division 11 (Chief Judge Shin Jin-woo), which is in charge of cases such as Representative Lee’s third-party bribery, and requested reallocation. did it Representative Lee was handed over to trial on June 12 this year on charges of having Ssangbangwool pay $8 million, including the cost of North Korea’s smart farm project and his own visit to North Korea, while he was governor of Gyeonggi Province. Representative Lee’s side filed an application to the Supreme Court in July this year to merge the remittance case to North Korea with the ‘Daejang-dong, Baekhyeon-dong, Seongnam FC, and Wirye suspicions’ case currently in progress at the Seoul Central District Court, but it was rejected.
It is not known what specific reason Representative Lee gave for reallocation. However, there is analysis in the legal community that the purpose is to avoid the court that sentenced Lee Hwa-young, the former vice-governor of peace in Gyeonggi Province, to a heavy sentence. On June 7 this year, the court found former Deputy Governor Lee guilty of the charges and sentenced him to 9 years and 6 months in prison in the first trial, and the opposition party is raising speculation that the court is likely to find Lee guilty as well. On the 30th of last month, Democratic Party lawmaker Lee Geon-tae proposed an amendment to the Criminal Procedure Act that included mandatory exclusion of judges involved in trials that found guilty of accomplices.
Representative Lee is currently on trial at the Seoul Central District Court on charges of violating the Public Official Election Act and instigation of perjury. The first trial sentences for both cases will be handed down on the 15th and 25th of next month, respectively.
