Lee Jeong-jae as Ki-hoon in ‘Ogame 2’ “Our society needs Ki-hoon’s ‘conscience’ now”
“I think Ki-hoon’s ‘conscience’ is needed in our society now. We need someone who takes action without running away or avoiding it.”
Actor Lee Jeong-jae, who plays Ki-hoon, the main character of Season 2 of ‘Squid Game’, said after thinking deeply in an interview conducted at a cafe in Jongno-gu, Seoul on the 3rd. This means that Korean society most needs people like Ki-hoon, who are immature but have good intentions and want to protect their own conscience. He said, “In some ways, keeping your conscience is easy, but in difficult situations, only I know. If I hide it from myself, I can avoid the situation.”
“While filming season 2, the word ‘conscience’ came to mind the most. “Why didn’t Kihoon get on the plane? Why couldn’t he spend the money?”
This is the first time he has met with the domestic media since Season 2 of ‘Squid Game’ was released on December 26 last year. He played a serious role throughout Season 2, but on this day, he appeared in the interview with a bright and clear appearance, like Ki-hoon in Season 1.
Regarding the difference of likes and dislikes about Season 2, he said, “I am much happier because I felt like I was getting an average rating.” He said, “I think the harsh criticism is an opinion that must be seen,” and “I think they are saying this because there is still 3 seasons left.”
He said, “I have no desire to make excuses for the viewers’ reactions or persuade them of the intention of the work. “I think many people’s doubts will naturally be resolved once Season 3 is released,” he said.
However, the difference in acting tone between Season 1 and Season 2 was actively explained.
He said, “We developed Ki-hoon for Season 2 based on the red-haired Ki-hoon shown in the second half of Season 1.” He added, “After the game ended, Ki-hoon was already a completely different person than before.” He said, “I played many characters, but I feel sorry for Ki-hoon the most. I felt sad while acting because I doubted whether I would be able to return to the bright and positive self of the past even if I achieved my goal.”
Lee Jung-jae said that the reason Ki-hoon survived in Season 1 was because of his unique goodness. He said, “If Ki-hoon had tried to win the game until the end with the goal of winning the prize money, the twist in the second half of Season 1 would not have happened.” He added, “Season 1 is a small message that if people act with good intentions, unexpected results will appear.” “It contains,” he said.
He said, “Even in Season 2, such messages were highlighted in several scenes. “If Ki-hoon’s good heart continues into season 3, the twists and turns we saw in season 1 may appear again,” he said about season 3.
The most impressive memory was when I entered the set for the first filming of Season 2. He said, “Wearing green sweatpants, I grabbed the set door and couldn’t open it right away,” and “Once inside the set, it was a burden to act out the hellish situation from Season 1.” “I grabbed the door handle and hesitated for 6 or 7 seconds,” he said.
He also explained the appearance fee, which is known to be over 1 billion won per episode. He said, “There is a lot of talk about my appearance fee, but there is only one thing I requested through the American agency. I said that I wanted to make a contract as smooth as possible so that there would be no inconvenience to both Netflix and my company.”
He said, “I didn’t want to set a bad precedent. “I really didn’t want to hear people say, ‘You said you were a little successful?’” he said.
He also explained that People Power Party lawmaker Yoon Sang-hyun appeared on the YouTube channel and showed off his friendship by saying, “I drank with actors Jung Woo-sung and Lee Jung-jae, but Lee Jung-jae said he couldn’t drink any more after about 10 rounds of bomb liquor.” He said, “I remember having a meal there about once. “It was a gathering of about 30 to 40 people in the entertainment business,” he said. “It was not a special meeting place for the congressman, me, and Mr. Woosung, and it was not a place to drink. “I don’t really understand why he said that.”
Regarding the photo taken with Han Dong-hoon, former representative of the People Power Party, becoming a hot topic, he said, “There is absolutely no misconception that one of us published the photo to show off our friendship,” and added, “We only had a meal once because we were classmates. “I never once mentioned anything about his actions.”
