Wild “Suspicion of cultural blacklist intervention”
With opposition to “celebrities’ political polarization”

The opposition parties, including the Democratic Party of Korea, decided to hold a two-day confirmation hearing for Lee Jin-sook, the nominee for the chairman of the Korea Communications Commission, on the 24th and 25th, and appointed celebrities Jung Woo-sung and Seol Woon-do, as well as film directors Park Chan-wook, Bong Joon-ho, and Ryu Seung-wan, as witnesses. The People Power Party protested, asking, “Are you taking sides with celebrities?” and walked out.

On the 17th, lawmakers from the Democratic Party, the Fatherland Innovation Party, and the New Reform Party held a plenary session of the National Assembly Science, Technology, Information, Broadcasting and Communications Committee and decided to call 27 witnesses and 46 reference persons for the two-day confirmation hearing of this candidate. The People Power Party argued that ministerial-level officials other than the Prime Minister or the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court should follow the custom of not having a two-day hearing, but the opposition camp pushed ahead with the decision by a show of hands, saying, “We need two days to thoroughly verify their media views and job capabilities.”

In particular, it was decided to investigate the candidate’s involvement in the suspicions of a blacklist in the cultural world during the Lee Myung-bak administration, and to call celebrities Kang Sung-beom, Kim Gyu-ri, Kim Mi-hwa, Kim Je-dong, Kwon Hae-hyo, Noh Jeong-ryeol, Moon So-ri, Seol Woon-do, So Yu-jin, Ahn Chi-hwan, and Jung Woo-sung, as well as film directors Ryu Seung-wan, Park Chan-wook, Bong Joon-ho, Yang Woo-seok, and Yoon Je-gyun as witnesses. The witnesses adopted were Ryu Hee-rim, Chairwoman of the Korea Communications Standards Commission; former National Intelligence Service Director Won Se-hoon; former Korea Communications Commission Chairmen Lee Dong-kwan and Kim Hong-il; and former MBC President Kim Jae-chul.

The People Power Party’s defense committee members protested, saying, “The Democratic Party is trying to politically retaliate by calling in all the people they have criticized as witnesses and later charging them with failing to appear as witnesses,” and “They are trying to take political sides by calling in celebrities who have nothing to do with public official verification,” and walked out of the room.
