Regarding her suspension from duty after the impeachment bill passed at the National Assembly plenary session on the 2nd, Commissioner of the Korea Communications Commission Lee Jin-sook expressed, “I deeply regret that the work of the Korea Communications Commission is now at risk of being paralyzed.”

The chairman said in a statement on the same day, “The unfairness of the impeachment will be revealed during the impeachment trial.”

He criticized, “The resignation of the former chairman and vice chairman was a sacrifice to prevent the KCC’s work from being interrupted due to a strategic impeachment,” and “However, this vicious cycle of ‘impeachment and voluntary resignation’ can no longer continue.” Former chairman Lee Dong-kwan and Kim Hong-il, and former vice chairman Lee Sang-in, previously resigned voluntarily before the opposition party’s impeachment vote.

He continued, “Now is the time to end this vicious cycle,” and added, “As the chairman of the Korea Communications Commission, I intend to stand firm against the tyranny of the huge opposition party’s impeachment.” Unlike his predecessor, this chairman’s decision is interpreted as his intention to seek the Constitutional Court’s judgment while suspended from his duties without resigning.

The chairman added, “I hope that the unprecedented impeachment of the chairman of the Korea Communications Commission will minimize the gap in broadcasting and communications policy,” and “I will faithfully cooperate with the Constitutional Court’s impeachment trial and do my best so that the Korea Communications Commission can return to normal as soon as possible.”

The opposition parties, including the Democratic Party of Korea, passed the impeachment motion against Chairman Lee at the plenary session of the National Assembly on this day with 186 votes in favor, 1 against, and 1 invalid vote out of 188 members present. The People Power Party, which opposed the impeachment motion, did not participate in the vote.
