The theory of judging the regime and the theory of support are in tension.

Democratic Party candidate Lee Gwang-jae (left photo) and People Power Party candidate Ahn Cheol-soo, who are competing in the 22nd National Assembly election in the Bundang-gap constituency of Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, are appealing for support on the 4th, the day before the start of early voting. “Conflicts over medicine can only be resolved when the government is empowered.” (Kim Joo-seung, 65, Yatap-dong, Bundang-gu, Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi-do)

“I feel like the economy is worse than during the International Monetary Fund (IMF) foreign exchange crisis. “I pick up fruit at the market and put it back several times.” (Mr. Lee, 44, Imae-dong, Bundang-gu, Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi-do)

On the 4th, a day before the start of early voting, the People Power Party candidate Ahn Cheol-soo and the Democratic Party of Korea candidate Lee Kwang-jae faced each other in the Bundang-gap constituency of Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province. Candidate Ahn is appealing to voters by claiming that he is the ‘right person to resolve legislative conflicts.’ Candidate Lee is pointing out the problem of high inflation and emphasizing the theory of judgment on the regime.

Bundang Gap, where Seohyeon-dong, Baekhyeon-dong, Imae-dong, Yatap-dong, and Pangyo-dong are located, has a high income level in Seongnam City and has traditionally had a strong conservative tax. Since the 16th general election in 2000, when constituencies were created, candidates from conservative parties have been elected for the past 20 years, except for Democratic Party lawmaker Kim Byeong-kwan, who was elected in the 20th general election in 2016.

However, recent changes in public opinion have also been detected. In a public opinion poll conducted by SBS from Ipsos from the 31st of last month to April 2, Candidate Ahn received 45%, a difference of 1 percentage point from Candidate Lee (46%), within the margin of error. In a public opinion poll commissioned by Korea Research conducted by KBS between the 1st and 3rd of this month, candidate Lee (51%) led candidate Ahn (38%) by 13 percentage points.

Candidate Ahn met with the Dong-A Ilbo and said, “Doctors should return to the side of patients, and the government is actively conveying its opinion to discuss increasing the number of doctors in the consultative body.” Candidate Ahn also emphasized, “We have worked tirelessly for the region, including virtually confirming the decision to host the KAIST Artificial Intelligence Research Institute.” An official from Candidate Ahn’s camp said, “Recently, there has been a change from ‘close competition’ to ‘close dominance’,” and added, “The criticism of the regime is strong, but Candidate Ahn’s personal skills are enough to overcome it.”

The Democratic Party also believes that candidate Lee’s approval rating has changed from ‘closely inferior’ to ‘closely superior’. An official from Candidate Lee’s camp said, “It is a close race within the margin of error,” and added, “Considering the voter turnout of ‘Shy Conservatives’ on election day, we will encourage supporters to rally until the end.” Candidate Lee met with the Dong-A Ilbo and said, “The score that the people give to President Yoon Seok-yeol is only 40 points.” Candidate Lee said, “I can encompass both administration and politics based on my experience as the head of the Blue House’s Government Affairs Situation Center and as a three-term member of the National Assembly.”

Local public sentiment also showed mixed reactions to current issues such as medical gaps and high inflation. A man in his 60s who has lived in Yatap-dong for 30 years said, “For both the medical gap problem and economic policy to be resolved successfully, we need to trust the government and give it our strength.” On the other hand, Mr. Park (45), a self-employed person, said, “This entire shopping mall is not doing business these days.” He added, “Now they say they will do everything they can to control prices, but what did they do until they rose like this?”
