Lee Young-pyo, a former vice-chairman of the Korea Football Association and now a KBS soccer commentator, recently criticized the appointment of Hong Myung-bo as head coach of the national soccer team, saying that his conduct was problematic.
In an interview with JTBC on the afternoon of the 9th, the committee member said, “We asked the opinions of three people, Poyet (former Greek national team coach), Wagner (former Norwich coach), and Coach Hong Myung-bo, and the original procedure should have been to communicate with the existing power reinforcement committee members and then make an announcement,” adding, “The biggest problem is that that process was omitted.”
The committee member pointed out, “When the information about the appointment of the head coach was delivered to the committee members for strengthening the national team, there was a mention of security issues. (If they had not mentioned security issues as the reason) they ended up not trusting the committee members who had worked together for five months to appoint the head coach.”
He continued, “It is clear that (the Football Association) did not initially intend to select a domestic coach,” and “As of mid-to-late April, there was a fairly active movement to select and search for a foreign coach.”
The committee member expressed regret despite being appointed as the coach. He said, “During the 2002 World Cup, we experienced firsthand how one good foreign coach (Guus Hiddink) could change the team,” and “A golden generation emerged with Son Heung-min, Hwang Hee-chan, Hwang In-beom, Kim Min-jae, Lee Kang-in, and Lee Jae-sung, so I expected that if one foreign coach came, good things would happen at the 2026 World Cup.”
The committee member said, “I really want to apologize for the results,” and “I couldn’t bring in a manager that would satisfy the fans. It’s very unfortunate, and I apologize for that.”
When the host asked, “Wasn’t it a money issue to bring in a foreign coach?” the member replied, “I don’t think it was really a money issue,” and “The value of the joy felt through soccer cannot be converted into money. The association made a lot of money by selling TV broadcasting rights to OTT (online video service) and terrestrial channels, so the funds were sufficient.”
The committee member said, “The biggest problem in this process of selecting a new manager is that it disappointed the fans,” and “The association made several administrative mistakes. If mistakes are repeated, they can become a problem rather than a mistake. (A series of processes) require a complete change.”
In an interview with KBS on the 8th, regarding the appointment of Hong Myung-bo as the new head coach of the national soccer team, the committee member said, “This is a decision that K-League fans simply cannot accept or understand,” and “I have serious doubts about whether this decision will actually lead to support for the national team.”
On the 7th, the Korea Football Association announced that it had appointed Hong Myung-bo, the Ulsan HD coach, as the new head coach of the Korean national football team. Contrary to expectations, the appointment of a domestic coach led to a barrage of criticism, and the controversy grew when former national football team member Park Joo-ho, a member of the power reinforcement committee, uploaded a YouTube video the day after the Korea Football Association announcement, revealing that he was unaware of the process of appointing Hong.
