Leeds United extended their unbeaten start to the season with a 1-1 draw against Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium on Saturday, as Luka Vuskovic canceled out Jayden Bogle’s opener.
What might have been, and what surely should have been. By the time the referee brought a strange, enthralling contest to a close, two exhausted teams trudged off the pitch wondering how neither had managed to secure all three points. For Leeds, the overriding emotion was frustration at missed opportunities. For Brighton, a rousing late surge rescued a point from a fixture where they had spent the better part of an hour second-best.
Jayden Bogle Ends a Long Drought Before the Break
Leeds arrived on the south coast carrying a grim historical record. Not since 2009 had the Yorkshire club won an away match against Brighton, and they had gone eight games without a goal at the home of the Seagulls, dating back to 2012. That miserable run evaporated in the 15th minute when Jayden Bogle seized his moment.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin initially saw a close-range header palmed away by Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, but Ao Tanaka reacted quickest to keep the ball alive and square it across the face of goal for Bogle to tap in from a yard out. The breakthrough rewarded a dominant first-half display from the visitors, who controlled the tempo and penned their hosts deep.
Calvert-Lewin could—and perhaps should—have put the game out of reach before the interval. Twice the striker broke through the home defense, first dragging a one-on-one shot wide and later rounding Verbruggen, only to see Lewis Dunk slide back to clear his effort off the goal line. Tanaka also rattled the crossbar with a fiercely struck effort from a corner, leaving Leeds with an expected goals tally of 2.66 while Brighton languished just above 0.1.
Luka Vuskovic Sparks Brighton’s Second-Half Rampage
Following a smattering of half-time boos from the home supporters, Brighton head coach Fabian Hürzeler oversaw a complete tactical and energetic transformation. The home side unleashed 17 shots after the interval, turning the match into a frantic, end-to-end battle.

Charalampos Kostoulas carved through the Leeds defense on a mazy solo run before firing straight at James Trafford, and Malick Yalcouyé forced a full-stretch save from the Leeds goalkeeper. The sustained pressure finally yielded an equalizer in the 71st minute when Luka Vuskovic rose highest to head in Maxim De Cuyper’s corner, scoring his first goal for his new club.
Suddenly, Brighton were rampant. Yasin Ayari drew another save from Trafford, Promise David headed just over the crossbar, and Pascal Gross squandered a glaring opportunity from four yards out in the dying moments. Leeds, meanwhile, had a Tanaka strike correctly disallowed for a narrow offside early in the second half.
Daniel Farke Weighs the Positives and the Points Left Behind
Head coach Daniel Farke acknowledged the difficulty of the venue while expressing lingering regret over the chances squandered during their first-half ascendancy.
“That is a really good point for us, given our recent record here. It’s ages since we took something last time here, from a long travel to Brighton, and even longer ago when we scored a goal here. More was even possible. I would say, at half-time, we should have been out of sight.”
