The Minister of Rural Development and Food, Lefteris Avgenakis, regarding the loss of Stavroula Kourakou-Dragonas, stated the following:
Stavroula Kourakou-Dragona, the “Lady of the Vineyards”, the great lady of Greek wine, passed away yesterday.
A brilliant scientist who highlighted the history of Greek wine, pioneering with her articles as well as her great scientific and writing work.
Its significant and at the same time leading participation in the events of the wine industry for over half a century was what shaped the edifice of modern wine Greece.
Her iconic work is difficult to describe in a few words. The first woman with a degree in oenology in Europe, she was, among other things – and after being elected by popular vote – President of the International Vine and Wine Organization, Director for 20 years of the Wine Institute in Greece, President of European Union Committees on wine legislation.
It is with deep sadness that we say goodbye to this iconic personality of Greek wine, who leaves behind a great legacy of ethics, dedication and love for research and knowledge about the wine he loved so much.
