by time news

The first exhibition in Europe to commemorate the Great East Japan Earthquake and its effects on the urban, rural and social fabric, through more than 100 works by established and emerging contemporary Japanese artists. Milan, Italy – From September 17th to October 12th 2024the exhibition “Legacy3.11 The Power of art and creativity from 3.11, Japan Past, Present, and Future” will be hosted by the former Cisterne della Steam Factory in Milan.

The entire project represents a profound artistic tribute to the Great East Japan Earthquake.
On March 11, 2011, Japan was struck by a devastating 9.0 magnitude earthquake, followed by a tsunami, marking one of the most significant natural disasters in the nation’s history. Thirteen years later, the scars left by this event continue to mark entire generations. Although all the efforts put into rebuilding the affected areas have provided some relief, the serenity and hope of the affected inhabitants have only been partially restored. In addition, the continuing environmental challenges triggered by the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster still require great attention and new solutions.

The exhibition presents over 100 works by internationally recognized Japanese artists, including signatures from the Tohoku region, who have had to transform the experience and trauma of the disaster into a new legacy for the future. The exhibition space will also host archive materials, film screenings and video presentations that dialogue around the event of the catastrophic earthquake and its profound consequences.

This project inaugurates an important new bridge between the past and present of Japanese culture, forged by resilience in the face of natural and man-made disasters, and creatively and practically projects this legacy into the future, offering a global perspective on the crises that the entire world is called to face today.
