“It took me a while to make this decision, but now I have clarity and I am so happy to finally be able to tell you. At the beginning of 2024 I felt in my heart and soul that this would be my last season as a footballer.”. With these words the striker of the United States and the San Diego Wave Alex Morgan announced her retirement from football on social media: “I am incredibly honored to have worn the national team jersey for more than 15 years, I have learned so much about myself in this time and it is thanks to my teammates and our fans. I grew up with this team that was much more than a football team, where friendship, respect and support were never lacking. – continues the class of ’89 – We have given a relentless push for global investment in women’s sports and I am immensely proud of where this team is going”.

Her final appearance will be on Sunday when her team, for which she has scored 22 goals in 45 appearances, hosts the North Carolina Courage in what promises to be a memorable night for fans of women’s soccer.

Morgan leaves after an incredible career that saw her win the World Cup twice (2015 and 2019) and the Olympics in 2012, also winning a bronze in 2020, with the US national team where she boasts 224 appearances and 123 goals from 2010 to today. At club level, she has worn the jerseys of West Coast FC, California Storm, Pali Blues, Western New York Flash, Seattle Sounders, Portland Thorns, Orlando Pride and San Diego Wave in the USA as well as those of Lyon, with whom she won the treble in 2016-17, and Tottenham in Europe, scoring a total of 94 goals in 212 appearances in the various tournaments played.
