An icon of British cinema, 90-year-old actor Michael Caine announced this Saturday (14) that he will leave the big screen, ending his seven-decade career with the critically applauded film “The Great Escaper”.

Caine acted in more than 160 films and was nominated for an Oscar six times, winning the coveted statuette for his work in Woody Allen’s “Hannah and Her Sisters” in 1986 and for “The Rules of Life” in 2000.

“I can’t stop saying I’m going to retire. Well, that’s the case now,” he told BBC Radio 4.

“I told myself that I had just made a film, in which I played the lead role and for which I received incredible reviews… What am I going to do to overcome this?”, he explained.

“The Great Escaper”, which premiered on October 6 in the United Kingdom, tells the true story of World War II veteran Bernie Jordan, who fled the nursing home where he lived to attend the 70th anniversary ceremony of the 1944 Landings in Normandy, France. He shares the scene with Glenda Jackson, who passed away in June, aged 87.

“The only roles they can give me now are those of men who are 90 years old. Or maybe 85 years old,” he said.

“They won’t be protagonists. There are no 90-year-old protagonists, there are young and seductive boys and girls. So I told myself that it’s best to leave”, he commented.

Maurice Joseph Micklewhite was born on March 14, 1933, in south London, into a poor environment.

When he was looking for an artistic name, he discovered the poster for the film “The Caine Mutiny” (“The Ship of Revolt” in Brazil) and adopted the ship’s name as a pseudonym in 1954.

The actor was one of the first personalities in the world of culture to speak out in favor of Brexit, in 2016.

“Sir Michael” was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2000.
