Beloved B-Movie Producer Roger Corman Honored at Beyond Fest
Renowned B-movie producer Roger Corman was honored at the genre-focused Beyond Fest on Saturday evening. Corman, now 97 years old, was celebrated for his contributions to the film industry, having helped launch the careers of directors such as Jonathan Demme and Curtis Hanson.
Corman, who directed over 45 features, decided to create his own independent production and distribution company, New World Pictures, in 1970. This move allowed him to take control of his own films after being cheated out of profits by his distributors. The decision proved to be a turning point for his career and paved the way for the success of many up-and-coming filmmakers.
The tribute to Corman at Beyond Fest included a marathon of four 35mm features produced by the mogul. The movies showcased Corman’s diverse range, from the Ramones romp “Rock ‘n’ Roll High School” to the horror comedy “Piranha” and the goofy mood piece “The Raven.” A panel discussion followed the marathon, featuring directors Ron Howard, Joe Dante, Allan Arkush, Amy Holden Jones, and producer Jon Davison – all of whom Corman had helped launch into Hollywood under New World Pictures.
During the panel discussion, the directors praised Corman’s knowledge of filmmaking and his demand for hard work. They expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work with someone who had more experience and a better understanding of the industry than themselves.
