Two Cases of Legionnaires’ Disease Found at Eau Claire Care Facility

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) – The Eau Claire City-County Health Department has reported two cases of legionnaires’ disease within an Eau Claire care facility. Legionnaires’ disease, a type of pneumonia that can be fatal if left untreated, is caused by inhaling legionella bacteria present in warm water sources such as water heaters.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), both cases have emerged in the past three months. While the Health Department assures the general public need not worry, they are concerned about potential issues at the care facility.

Jackie Krumenauer, Communicable Disease Manager, explained, “Healthy individuals typically do not fall ill from legionella bacteria. However, those over 50 years old with chronic lung conditions, current or past smokers, and immunocompromised individuals are at a higher risk of becoming ill.”

The Health Department has decided not to disclose the name of the facility currently. They are collaborating with the care facility to identify the source of the bacteria, which remains unknown at this time.

Legionnaires’ disease is a serious respiratory illness that often requires hospitalization. Symptoms include cough, shortness of breath, high fever, muscle aches, and headaches. Prompt treatment with antibiotics is crucial to prevent complications and potential fatalities.

The Health Department urges anyone experiencing symptoms to seek medical attention, especially those who have been at the care facility or are considered high-risk individuals. They emphasize the importance of early detection and treatment.

Residents and staff at the care facility are being closely monitored to ensure their well-being. The facility has implemented necessary measures to prevent further spread of the bacteria and is working diligently to identify the source of contamination.

The investigation into the outbreak is ongoing, and the Health Department is determined to take appropriate actions to safeguard the health of the community. Updates regarding the investigation will be provided as new information becomes available.
