Legislative in Spain: the favorite right, the far right in ambush

Spain voted on Sunday for early legislative elections scrutinized across Europe, for which the right-wing opposition is the big favorite, but which also potentially would bring the far right to power.

These elections could put an end to the left-wing coalition led by Pedro Sanchez, in power since 2018, and see Vox, the far-right party, come to power in a coalition with the Popular Party (PP, conservative), as is already the case in many cities and several autonomous regions. Such a scenario would mark the return to government of the far right in Spain for the first time since the end of the Franco dictatorship almost half a century ago (1975).

The vote will end at 8 p.m. but it will take about an hour for the publication of the first official results.

A Russian airstrike overnight Saturday-Sunday on the port of Odessa in southern Ukraine left two people dead and 22 injured and severely damaged the city’s iconic cathedral, Ukrainian authorities said.

“The Russians deliberately aimed their missiles at the historic center of Odessa, which is protected by UNESCO”lamented the governor of the oblast, adding that “everything that was created with hard work by great architects is now destroyed”.

The Russian bombardment of Odessa came shortly after Moscow announced it had carried out military maneuvers in the Black Sea, where tensions have increased since the suspension of the agreement on Ukrainian grain exports.
