The National Assembly decided not to archive the impeachment proceedings against Wilman Terán, former president of the Judiciary Council, and Maribel Barreno, former member, during the session of this Monday, July 8, 2024.
With 88 votes in favor, the motion presented by Jorge Peñafiel of Construye to continue with the process against both former officials, who face accusations in the Judicial Independence case, was approved.
The Construye, Social Christian Party (PSC), National Democratic Action (ADN) and some independent parties supported the measure, while the Citizen Revolution expressed its opposition with 46 votes against.
Following the approval, Assembly Speaker Henry Kronfle announced that the impeachment trial will be formally convened, as established by law, and scheduled for Tuesday, July 16, 2024.
In this session, legislators will decide whether to censure Wilman Terán and Maribel Barreno, which would imply a two-year ban from holding public office. Both are accused of failing to fulfill their duties related to alleged irregularities in the judicial process and violations of the voting system.
Wilman Terán is in preventive detention at the maximum security prison La Roca for his involvement in the Metastasis case and the Judicial Independence case. Meanwhile, Maribel Barreno also faces charges for influence peddling and is in preventive detention for the Vocales case and the Judicial Independence case.
