SHEFFIELD – WBA featherweight world champion, Leigh Wood, succeeded in thwarting Josh Warrington’s attempt to become world champion for the third time. The two British boxers fought in the Sheffield Arena boxing ring in Sheffield, England, Sunday (8/10/2023).

In fact, Wood gave the boxer nicknamed The Leeds Warrior a seventh round TKO defeat. Now he has improved his fighting record to 28-3 (17KO). Meanwhile, in another corner, Warrington had to be satisfied with receiving his third professional defeat in 35 professional fights (31-3-1, 8KO).

Wood himself won the WBA belt for the first time after winning by TKO over Can Xu in July 2021. After successfully defending it by recording a TKO win over Michael Conlan in March 2022, Wood lost his title following a TKO defeat to Mauricio Lara, last February.

However, Wood managed to win it back from Lara with a unanimous decision victory last May. And now he keeps it that way against Warrington.

After the fight, Wood said that Warrington was a good boxer with some cool punches. “He hit me with a punch to the back of my head which made me dazed, but he is a great fighter and it was a great fight,” said Wood, as quoted by Leeds Live, Sunday (8/10/2023).

“All I can say is that I had a game changer. Unfortunately, the further the fight went, the more difficult it became. As soon as I returned to the game plan, the opportunity immediately appeared,” continued the 35-year-old boxer.

Next, Wood will take time to rest for a while, while training in the gym and waiting until the end of the football season. “We know what will happen next, right? (match at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground),” he said.

Meanwhile, Wood’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, said that his boxer would move up to super featherweight in his next fight. And the duel will most likely be held at Nottingham Forest’s headquarters, City Ground.

“He’s done at featherweight. Whether he’s going to move up a class and fight Joe Cordina for the world title or fight Warrington, at featherweight he’s done. We need the next City Ground for Leigh Wood and he deserves it for what he’s done do it in the featherweight division,” explained the Matchroom Boxing boss.
