They launch a new drug that protects 100 percent of the infection of HIV.

At the upcoming 25th International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2024), which will be held virtually in Munich, Germany, from July 22 to 26, the American biopharmaceutical company Gilead Sciences presented “Lenacapavir”, a Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) capsid inhibitor that has demonstrated 100% efficacy in preventing HIV infections.

This is because the drug has already passed phase 3, called ‘Purporse 1’, of the trials: the injection protected 100 percent of the 5,300 women – intentionally pregnant and lactating – and cisgender girls between 16 and 25 years old from South Africa and Uganda, subjected to the test, said the company based in Foster City, California, in a statement on its website.

She also explained that during the interim analysis there were no incident cases of HIV infection among women who received Lenacapavir, while there were 39 and 16 cases in the groups treated with other drugs, so it was recommended to stop the blind phase of the study and offer lenacapavir to all patients.

On the other hand, Jared Baeten, Senior Vice President of Clinical Development for Virology at Gilead Sciences, said that Lenacapavir has proven to be a vital tool in preventing HIV infections and is expected to continue advancing towards the goal of ending the epidemic.

“Our contributions to this year’s meeting demonstrate Gilead’s leadership in patient-centered innovations in HIV prevention, treatment and cure. Our scientific advancements are based on collaboration with research and community partners around the world. We look forward to a future where every person has choices to help achieve their own success in HIV prevention or treatment and where we have come together to end the HIV epidemic.”

It was also stated that trials with men will be completed by 2024. So if everything goes according to plan, two injections a year will be enough to completely prevent HIV infection.

At the moment, Gilead has not indicated what the price of the vaccines would be or when they will be available on the market; however, it is expected that it will be available as soon as possible and at a price that is affordable for the entire population.
