Leon Marchand of France has broken the record of legendary Michael Phelps in swimming. At the 2004 Beijing Olympics, Phelps set a record in the men’s 400 meters with a time of 4 minutes 08.26 seconds. After 20 years, his record was broken by young French swimmer Leon.

He won gold in the men’s 400m on Sunday (July 28) with a time of 4:02.50 seconds. Tomuyuku Matsushita of Japan won the silver with a time of 4 minutes 08.66 seconds. And Carson Foster of the United States won the bronze with a time of 4 minutes 08.85 seconds.

Leon was well ahead of them from the start of the swim. It seemed that this local swimmer was swimming in a different pool. Others were beyond his reach.

While receiving the medal, the audience of France created a different atmosphere by singing the national anthem with hundreds of voices.

After winning the gold, 22-year-old Leone said, ‘It was a great time for me. I am actually enjoying this time. My hair stood on end after stepping on the podium. I’m really proud to do something like that as a Frenchman.’

It was Leon’s first Olympic medal.
