Leonardo, Profumo grows in naval electronics: buys 30% of Gem

Leonardo acquired a stake of participation, equal to 30%, of the share capital of Electronic gem, an Italian company specializing in radar production 3D small and medium-sized, electro-optical sensors and inertial systems for the maritime, avionics and land sectors. The operation, a note reads, will contribute to competitive strengthening in business of naval electronics, in particular of short and medium range sensors, e will allow Leonardo to expand and diversify its offer, as well as to improve the engineering, production and marketing processes of products of a different range than those in the portfolio.

Gem, that matters about 130 employees, operates in sectors complementary to those of Leonardo, with competitive systems such as navigation radar and coastal monitoring, electro-optical equipment and inertial navigation and orientation systems medium and high precision based on fiber optic gyroscopes. The company is also active in the maritime and border surveillance market.

Gem has capacity for the production of critical components for Leonardo’s products, highly specialized resources in radar and electronics and a center of R&D advanced in which new quantum technologies for navigation and communication are tested. The agreement provides for an option mechanism call e put to be exercised in 2024, which would allow Leonardo to acquire control of the company.

At the same time as the signing of the acquisition, the note adds, Leonardo and Gem signed a commercial and industrial agreement aimed at developing synergies in some areas of Gem competence complementary to Leonardo’s business, to propose promotional activities on the markets and to define and implement joint research and development projects. Among the areas of collaboration, the maritime and naval domain, the control of critical infrastructures and applications for terrestrial platforms.

Gem is characterized by a production made almost exclusively in house. Active on the civil and military markets, the company boasts a presence both in Italy and abroad and important collaborations with national and international players. As a supplier, Gem has been collaborating with Leonardo for years on numerous projects, including the program Forward e Naval Law, the plan for the modernization of the Italian Navy fleet. The partnership, the note concludes, is aimed at strengthening capacities in the reference sector to increase competitiveness in the long term, in line with the ‘Be Tomorrow – Leonardo 2030’ Strategic Plan.
