In the military leaders of the Polish resistance, before the beginning of the Warsaw Uprising on August 1, 1944, Leopold Okulicki was one of the leaders who pushed for the fight against the German occupiers to begin. When the insurgents capitulated to the superior power of the German people 63 days later, he did not go into exile on the instructions of the leaders of the Armia Krajowa (Home Army), but left the city with the rest of the civilian population. It was tasked with reorganizing Army units scattered across Poland. They faced now not only against the Germans, but also against the advancing Soviets, who had calmly watched the collapse of the Warsaw Uprising from the other bank of the Vistula.
