Los Angeles, June 13, 2025 – Time.news Staff.

Donald Trump‘s deployment of Marines to Los Angeles has ignited a firestorm of controversy, triggering legal challenges and protests across the nation as opponents decry what they see as increasingly authoritarian policies.

  • Approximately 200 Marines began operations in Los Angeles on June 13.
  • This deployment is part of a larger contingent that includes 700 Marines and 4,000 national Guard reservists.
  • California Governor Gavin Newsom has condemned the move and launched legal action.
  • Protests are planned in more than 100 cities nationwide under the banner “No Kings.”

what’s happening in Los Angeles? As of Friday, June 13, 2025, roughly 200 Marines have been deployed to Los Angeles, California, to safeguard a federal building housing the FBI. Ordered by former President Donald Trump, this action has escalated tensions and prompted immediate opposition.

These elite troops, typically stationed overseas, are equipped with anti-riot gear. Their arrival forms part of a larger deployment of approximately 700 Marines joining 4,000 National Guard reservists. Trump ordered this deployment against the wishes of local Democratic leaders.

This move marks a further escalation of the Trump governance’s response to protests against immigration raids conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).These raids have been occurring in the city, which has a large Hispanic population.

California Governor Gavin Newsom denounced what he called a “crazy fantasy of a dictatorial president” and sought legal intervention. A federal judge initially ruled the president’s deployment order illegal, but an appeals court later granted Trump a temporary reprieve, allowing him to maintain control of the military forces.

This legal battle coincides with nationwide demonstrations planned for Saturday under the slogan “No Kings,” with protests scheduled in roughly 100 cities.

Protests Spread to Other American Cities

On the same day as the deployment-also his 79th birthday-Donald Trump presided over a large military parade in Washington, D.C., celebrating the army’s 250th anniversary. Trump stated on his platform, “If I hadn’t sent the military to Los Angeles, the city would be burning completely right now.”

A central figure in the Democratic opposition, Mr. Newsom,57,is considered a potential Democratic candidate for the 2028 presidential election. Tensions in Los Angeles began on June 6, when protesters started demonstrating against aggressive raids targeting undocumented immigrants.

Did you know? Protests have spread to Las Vegas,Dallas,Austin,Chicago,Atlanta, and Boston, though to a lesser degree than in Los Angeles.

While largely peaceful, the demonstrations have included instances of violence, such as burning cars, looting, fireworks, and blocked freeways. The protests have recently spread to other American cities, including Las Vegas, Dallas, Austin, Chicago, Atlanta, and Boston, albeit on a smaller scale.

During his campaign, Trump pledged to target “criminals from abroad.” However, his efforts to combat illegal immigration have expanded beyond this, specifically targeting Latin American immigrants, who are vital to certain sectors of the economy.

Economically,Trump has admitted that he must “do something” quickly to protect the many immigrant workers in agriculture and the hotel industry. In Mexico, from which many undocumented immigrants in the United States originate, President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that she had told a senior American official that she “did not agree with using police raids to arrest people who work honestly.”
