This year, storms, hail and thunderstorms will probably cause less damage than the long-term average. The General Association of the German Insurance Industry (GDV) dares to make this forecast. “For 2023 we expect expenditure of around 4 billion euros.

The prerequisite for this is that the storms are limited and there are no major autumn and winter storms,” says GDV General Manager Jörg Asmussen. The half-year balance sheet of German insurers already looks positive. Storms caused insured losses of 1.9 billion euros in the first six months of the year.

Of this, EUR 1.4 billion related to damage to houses, household goods and commercial and industrial companies, and another EUR 500 million to motor insurance. This is slightly below the long-term average and also because there were no severe winter storms at the beginning of the year.

However, the insured losses do not provide a complete picture. So far, only about half of the buildings have been adequately insured against all natural hazards – including flooding as a result of heavy rain, according to the GDV.
