The Vampire Lestat Rebrands AMC Series, Expands Roles for Key Characters

AMC’s acclaimed gothic horror series, Interview With the Vampire, will undergo a significant transformation with its third season, rebranding as The Vampire Lestat to spotlight the complex and charismatic vampire, Lestat de Lioncourt. The shift in focus comes as Lestat, portrayed by Sam Reid, is reimagined as a contemporary rock star.

The upcoming season promises a deeper exploration of Lestat’s internal struggles, but not at the expense of other beloved characters. While the narrative will center on Lestat, the showrunners are actively expanding the roles of Louis de Pointe du Lac, played by Jacob Anderson, and their daughter, Claudia, portrayed by Delainey Hayles.

A New Narrative Focus & Expanded Roles

The decision to rebrand the series reflects a desire to delve into Lestat’s perspective, a narrative that the source material, Anne Rice’s novels, doesn’t fully explore. According to a showrunner, the original novel “doesn’t have a lot for [Lestat].” However, the creative team recognized an opportunity to enrich the story by giving voice to the enigmatic vampire.

This shift also prompted a reevaluation of the roles of Louis and Claudia. Initially, the showrunner noted that the source material offered limited development for Louis in this particular storyline. However, inspired by Anderson’s compelling performance, the writers decided to craft a substantial arc for the character.

“We wanted to provide a really good arc for Louis,” the showrunner explained. “Out of all the stories that we’re throwing up this year, it’s the one that’s working the best and quickest, and it is crystal clear, and it’s really divine and very, very heartbreaking.”

The same creative impetus drove the decision to expand Claudia’s role. Despite the book offering little for the character, the showrunners were captivated by Hayles’ talent. “She [was] an absolute beauty of an artist…and really changed a lot about our show for the better,” a showrunner stated. Fans can anticipate Claudia possessing “even more range” than previously seen.

Unmasking Lestat’s Complexity

By amplifying the stories of Louis and Claudia, The Vampire Lestat aims to provide a more nuanced understanding of its titular character. The series will explore the defenses Lestat erects to avoid self-examination.

“He…doesn’t want to examine himself, but is forced to,” a showrunner revealed. “There’s all this armor that he’s putting forth to try not looking inside, but [doing that] is very, very, very hard and messed up.”

Fans can expect a compelling and emotionally resonant season when The Vampire Lestat premieres on AMC in 2026.
