3rd CAMPAIGN FOR POST-ELECTION PEACE

Lubumbashi, January 1, 2024. The Human Rights Research Institute (IRDH) condemns attacks against representatives of the political party Ensemble pour la République, in Mbuji-mayi and Tshilenge, in Kasai-Oriental. This barbarity is crowned by the vicious destruction of the headquarters of this political party in Mbuji-Mayi. IRDH urges the General Prosecutor’s Office of place to urgently investigate these odious acts.
Indeed, the CENI published the provisional result announcing the victory of the presidential candidate Felix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo. On this occasion, young people identified as members of the winning candidate’s party attacked the person of Mr. Richard Mbuyi Kana, representative of the Ensemble party of the main challenger, candidate Moïse Katumbi. In addition, they destroyed the building housing the headquarters of the said party.
The IRDH finds it unacceptable that the celebration of victory turns into the hunt for opponents. He recommends to the Minister of the Interior to question the Provincial Governor and the Police Commander who were informed of the possibility of the attack, but neglected to protect these citizens and their property. Urgent help be provided to Mr. Mbuyi Kana, his biological family and the supporters of the Ensemble party forced into hiding.
Furthermore, it appears that in retaliation for what is happening in Kasai-Oriental, a group of young opposition people are attacking peaceful citizens in Likasi, Haut-Katanga.
In relation to the irregularities observed, corruption and fraud, the Institute recommends that victims complete the electoral process, through a procedure for litigation of the results before the competent courts, in accordance with the electoral law.
