As traffic accidents claiming to be caused by sudden acceleration continue to occur, the number of people looking for pedal-recording black boxes has skyrocketed.

According to Newsis on the 5th, after the accident involving a car driving in reverse at City Hall Station (1st) and the taxi crashing into the National Medical Center (3rd), black box sales companies are being flooded with inquiries about purchasing ‘pedal black boxes’.

A pedal black box is a black box that records the driver’s foot movements. Since there have been no cases of sudden acceleration recognized in Korea, pedal black box footage can be used as important evidence that the driver did not step on the accelerator.

On this day, on the online sales site of a black box seller, pedal black box products were ranked 1st and 2nd among the 10 most popular weekly products.

A company official said, “The number of inquiries has increased by nearly 100 times compared to before,” and “Since there have been no cases of sudden acceleration recognized in Korea yet, many people are purchasing it for the purpose of using it as evidence in case of an accident.”

Another industry official also said, “Sales of (pedal black boxes) increased by about 300% after the accident,” and “Drivers of the latest vehicles equipped with smart technology are mainly looking for pedal black boxes.”

According to Google Trends, which shows people’s interest based on search volume, the interest index (maximum 100) for ‘pedal black box’, which was 0 right before the City Hall Station reverse driving accident, increased for 5 consecutive days (12 → 59 → 66 → 86 → 100) starting from July 1, the day of the City Hall Station accident.

According to data submitted by the Korea Transportation Safety Authority to Rep. Yoon Jong-gun of the Democratic Party of Korea, a member of the National Assembly’s Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee, out of 236 reports of sudden acceleration received from 2017 to June of this year, not a single case was recognized as sudden acceleration.
