LG Energy Solutions announced on the 4th that it has begun construction of a new plant in Arizona, USA. This plant, for which a total of 7.2 trillion won will be invested, is scheduled to begin operation in 2026 with a total production capacity of 53GWh (gigawatt hours).

On the 3rd (local time), LG Energy Solutions held a construction status briefing in Queen Creek, Arizona for Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs, Arizona Department of Commerce President Sandra Watson, Pinell County Chairman Mike Goodman, and Queen Creek Mayor Julia Whitley. Announced the start of construction in earnest.

The new Arizona plant is LG Energy Solution’s second exclusive plant in North America, following the Michigan plant. Of the total production capacity of 53GWh, 36GWh of cylindrical batteries and 17GWh of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries for energy storage systems (ESS) are planned to be built. Na Hee-gwan, head of LG Energy Solutions’ Arizona branch, said, “We recently cleared the factory site and started construction, and the steel structure construction work is progressing smoothly. A total of four-digit new jobs will be created with operation in 2026.”

The company emphasized that it is especially meaningful in that it is the first cylindrical-only factory in the United States. The new Arizona plant will produce 46 series (46mm diameter) batteries for electric vehicles. The 46 series, called the next-generation battery, is a high-value battery with capacity and output about 5 times higher than the existing 21 series (diameter 21mm). Starting with Tesla, BMW, Volvo, and General Motors (GM) are pursuing its installation, making it a product with high growth potential.

LG Energy Solutions plans to begin mass production of 46 series batteries at its Ochang factory in Korea in the second half of this year (July to December). This is the most advanced production among major global battery manufacturers. LG Energy Solutions said, “We are receiving a lot of attention from major global customers even before production.” Oh Yoo-seong, head of LG Energy Solutions’ small battery division (executive director), said, “The Arizona plant will go beyond a simple production plant and become a representative center of cylindrical battery production for North America.”

Expectations are also high for the ESS-dedicated battery factory being built with a capacity of 17GWh. The United States is the world’s largest ESS market and is growing rapidly thanks to eco-friendly policies. LG Energy Solutions plans to reduce logistics and customs costs and secure price competitiveness through local production. He also emphasized that he will provide differentiated customer value by establishing a system to immediately respond to customer demands and manage the site.

Governor Hobbs said, “We will do our best to help Arizona residents acquire the skills necessary for jobs and to be an active partner (with LG Energy Solutions).”
