LG Household & Health Care announced on the 3rd that it had carried out a ‘Beach Combing’ campaign, a beach cleanup volunteer activity, at Jumunjin Beach in Gangneung-si, Gangwon-do on the 29th of last month. Beach Combing, which means ‘combing the beach’, means to meticulously collect trash and maintain the beach.
The campaign began in 2022 with the participation of 130 people, including participants in the youth climate and environmental activist training program ‘Green Value YOUTH’, to clean up the beach, and this year marks the third year.
Green Value YOUTH is a climate and environment activist training program co-hosted by LG Household & Health Care and the environmental group EcoNow, along with the United Nations Environment Programme and the Ministry of Environment. 20 teams and 103 young people selected from around the world, including Korea, the US, Japan, China, and the Netherlands, are carrying out team projects for one year to solve climate and environment issues on university campuses and in local communities.
On this day, youth activists, along with LG Household & Health Care executives, Gangneung City, and Wonju Regional Environmental Office officials, collected various types of trash that had washed up on the shore of Jumunjin for about two hours.
Vinyl and waste plastic were strewn all over the beach, and this year, the proportion of Styrofoam waste was said to be higher than usual. Styrofoam is lighter and smaller in volume than other types of waste, but it is the main cause of marine microplastic pollution and is fatal to the marine ecosystem.
After the collection activity, Green Value YOUTH activists reportedly held a discussion forum on eco-friendly ideas to create ‘differentiated customer value’ and also held group discussions. Environmental expert mentors attended the event and presented awards. The ‘Eusseuk Ijio’ group, which received the ‘Excellence Award’ that day, proposed an advertisement with the phrase ‘It fills up as it is reduced’ that highlighted eco-friendly values, and the ‘Scoop’ group, which was selected for the ‘Idea World Award’, presented an idea for a mask pack product using vegetable by-products as raw materials.
Choi Ye-woon (22), a participant in the ‘Eusseuk Ijio’ group, said, “Although it was a short period of time, I was able to grow significantly by becoming a brand manager and thinking deeply about eco-friendly customer value and sharing opinions with team members and expert mentors.”
An LG Household & Health Care ESG official emphasized, “We will continue to carry out activities where company executives and employees and young activists can work together to protect and nurture our marine ecosystem,” and “In addition, LG Household & Health Care will always listen to the ideas of young people, our future customers, and grow together with them.”
