The LGBTIQ+ Violence Observatory registered a total of 172 attacks against people from the community during the year 2022. The figure corresponds to the period between August and December of last year, since it was in August when the activities of this NGO began.

“Of the 85 cases reported as hate incidents or hate speech and discriminatory language issued by officials or public figures, 172 attacks were identified. It is important to highlight that the figures reflect the fact that the people affected may experience more than one type of violence and that there are cases with more than one person affected,” the report detailed. Likewise, it revealed that of the 126 aggressors, the majority were cisgender men, people whose sex and gender identity are the same.

In 70.8% of the registered cases, the people affected were alone, so in this case 51 people were affected; while in 29.2% of the cases they were accompanied by others from the same community, thus affecting a total of 63 people.

The types of aggressions registered by the observatory

Among the types of attacks that were recorded in the report, the cases where the victims were humiliated, ridiculed or shouted at, represented the majority, 61 out of 172. The other types of attacks were distributed as follows:

-Intimidate and threaten: 35

-Denying or hindering access to a space: 27

-Chasing or chasing: 8

-Not respecting their gender identity: 7

-Destroy or steal personal items: 4

-Dismissal: 3

-Close the aislar: 2

-Prevent donating blood: 1

-Force change appearance: 1

Murders of LGBTIQ+ people between August and December 2022

The LGBTIQ+ Observatory denounced the murder of 11 LGBTIQ+ people, a case of intragender violence between women, and a case of persecution and assault against a teenager between August and December of last year.

In at least 8 of the 11 murders, the victims were cisgender men who were in relationships with other men.

In addition, 2 murders of cisgender women were recorded, although we do not have precise information on their sexual orientations, both were related sexually and affectively with other women. The other murder was committed against a trans woman,” the report noted.

Regarding the states where the crimes occurred, five of the murders against LGBTIQ+ men took place in the Capital District, the remaining three were in Falcón, Carabobo and Anzoátegui.

On the other hand, the homicides against the two cisgender women took place in the state of Lara, in the middle of a public thoroughfare. While the case of the trans woman occurred in Valencia, Carabobo state, the cause of death was a gunshot wound.
