LGBTQ video published; Russia has imposed a fine of 40 lakhs on Tik Tok

Moscow: Russia fines TikTok Rs 40.77 lakh for publishing video with LGBTQ content A Russian court on Tuesday fined TikTok for failing to comply with a request to delete a video containing LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer) content.

The action was brought by the Tagansky District Court in Moscow following a complaint by Roskomnadzer, the Russian communications regulator. Tik Tok has to pay a fine of Rs 30 lakh (approximately Rs 40,77,480).

Along with this, the court also fined Amazon-owned platform Twitch, which aired an interview with a Ukrainian political leader, for containing false information.

A Russian court fined Twitch 55.41 lakh rupees for airing an interview with Oleksiy Arestovich, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. A court previously fined Twitch for airing Arrestovich’s interview.

Short video platform Tik Tok is owned by Chinese company Byte Dance Ltd. But the company has yet to respond to the court order, the Associated Press reported.

The court found the company violated Russian laws against promoting LGBTQ, radical feminism and a distorted view of traditional sexual relations. Tik Tok published the video in question earlier this year.

Meanwhile, the Russian government has stepped up efforts to impose more controls on the Internet and social media. WhatsApp and Snapchat were fined by a court earlier this year following Roskomnadzer’s complaint. Russia has also fined platforms like Spotify, which owns the dating app Tinder, and Matchgroup.
